Below are the basics that you can use to properly care for your teeth.
Sweat the Small Dental Health Stuff
Caring for your teeth requires more than brushing and flossing. Consume whole foods that are not laden with sugar, starch or acid. If you consume sugary or sticky foods, clean your mouth immediately after you indulge. Do not smoke or use tobacco products.
Rinse your mouth or floss and brush following each meal or snacking session. These might seem like minor details, yet they really do make a massive difference in the health of your teeth and gums as time progresses.
Caring for Your Teeth Requires a Careful Approach to Brushing
The manner in which you brush matters just as much as the frequency. A thorough brushing of the mouth takes a full two minutes. Brush your teeth at least two times per day. Your toothbrush should have soft bristles, a handle that fits comfortably in your hand and a head that does not prove too large for your mouth.
Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum line. Move the brush in small circles across the front, back, top and sides of the teeth. Brush your tongue, cheeks, gums and the roof of your mouth for a thorough mouth cleaning.
Floss at Least Once per Day to Remove Plaque and Food Particles
It is important to floss a minimum of once per day. A comprehensive flossing loosens those bits of food and plaque in the portions of your mouth that are difficult to clean. The area below the gum line and the small spaces between teeth are prone to the buildup of plaque. If plaque remains in the mouth, it will eventually turn to tartar and cause cavities, gum disease and other oral health issues.
Limit the Intake of Sugar and Candy
Mind your consumption of sugary foods and beverages. Bacteria in the mouth requires sugar to generate acids that deteriorate enamel and damage the teeth. As soon as one exposes the teeth to sugar, the teeth begin to demineralize. Do your best to avoid sugary and acidic foods and beverages like candy, sodas, chocolate, cookies, bread, fast food, acidic fruits, sugary snacks, crackers and breakfast cereals.
Alternatively, consuming crunchy vegetables and fruits like celery, apples, carrots and pears between meals will stimulate the production of saliva that protects the teeth. Furthermore, it will help to consume plenty of water as opposed to juice and soft drinks. Such sugary drinks have phosphoric acids that prevent the body from absorbing calcium. If you must consume such sugary and acidic drinks, use a straw to prevent direct contact with the teeth.
