How Does the Process Work When Getting a Dental Implant?

Getting a dental implant may appear to be a stressful process, particularly if the patient does not know what to expect. This, unfortunately, leads many to put off treatment altogether. However, gaining a better understanding of what to expect can ease any anxieties and allow a patient to make an informed decision. 

The dental implant process

Every patient is unique and may have a different experience when it comes to getting a dental implant for a missing tooth, but most dentists and oral surgeons follow common steps for each patient. The following are three steps that are commonly involved with treatment and information on what to expect after treatment is complete. 

The initial consultation

The first step in the process is the visit with the dental professional. During this visit, they can discuss treatment goals with the patient, conduct an oral examination and dental X-rays to get a better idea of the patient’s oral health and make a treatment recommendation. The consultation is also a great time for the patient to ask questions about treatment, including how to prepare for the implant placement and what to do after to make a fast recovery.

Preparing the mouth

Also during the initial consultation, the dental professional will check to see what if any procedures are needed before the placement of the implant. For example, a patient who is missing bone in the jaw as a result of tooth loss and has signs of gum erosion may need a bone grafting procedure and periodontal disease treatment before placement. Once the mouth is prepared and there is enough healthy bone in the jaw to support the implant, a day and time are scheduled for the first placement process. 

The placement process

The implant placement does involve minor surgery, so the patient will need to follow the preparation instructions provided. The placement involves making a small hole into the jawbone to insert the implant. After this surgery, a process known as osseointegration must take place in which the implant fuses together with the surrounding bone. This, along with the healing of the jaw, can take several weeks if not months. Once the mouth is healed, a second less-invasive procedure is scheduled to place the abutment and replacement tooth, which is typically a dental crown. 

Living with dental implants

After the placement of the abutment and artificial tooth, the mouth may need some time to heal and the patient should stick to soft foods and follow the post-care instructions provided. Once the mouth heals, then the patient will be able to enjoy their new and beautiful smile in every area of life. Many implant patients report feeling more confident about their appearance.
