Can Anyone Get Clear Braces?

Say goodbye to the chunky, metallic braces of the past and say hello to discreet, comfortable clear braces. Clear braces are a vast improvement on their bulky metal counterparts, offering a more comfortable and sleek treatment in the same amount of time. Everyone wants straight teeth and an attractive, white smile. Clear braces can help many people achieve their dream smile, although this treatment is not for everyone.

What are clear braces?

Clear braces offer essentially the exact same treatment as metal braces. There are a few different choices when it comes to clear braces, ranging from ceramic brackets to invisible aligners. This article will focus on the type of clear braces that have brackets and ligatures.

Clear braces, in contrast to metal braces, have brackets that are made from ceramic rather than metal. Metal braces are quite abrasive to the teeth, not to mention their displeasing appearance. The ceramic brackets and tooth-colored wires of clear braces allow for discreet treatment. The brackets of ceramic braces are much smaller and wear less on the teeth.

Metal braces can cause tooth decay much more easily, and these brackets tend to pull on the teeth more severely. This pulling motion can cause sensitivity, especially when tightening the ligatures. Furthermore, the wires in clear braces are less likely to pop and cause an uncomfortable poking sensation.

Ceramic braces can straighten teeth in as few as six months, much like metal braces. Each case varies, and treatment time can take anywhere from six months to a few years. Rest assured that ceramic braces effectively straighten teeth just as quickly and effectively as metal braces.

Who is a good candidate for clear braces?

The dentist will ultimately decide what method of treatment is best for each patient. If clear braces are not an option, there are other choices such as lingual braces (braces that are placed behind the teeth). If metal braces are required, know that orthodontic treatment is temporary, and the results will be worth the wait.

Almost anyone who needs braces can benefit from clear braces. Many adolescent and adult patients prefer clear braces to metal braces for their less visible appearance. In fact, clear braces barely show up in photos, much less in person.

Those who need other oral devices, such as expanders or jaw ligatures, may not be good candidates for ceramic braces. Metal braces are much more effective at moving the jaw for patients with an overbite, underbite or crossbite. Additionally, children may better benefit from metal braces, as they can better mold the developing teeth and jaw into their final position. Clear braces are recommended for older teenagers and adult orthodontic patients.
